Wedding Favours
There are various types of wedding favors that you may give, ranging from the seasonal to the modern. If you are looking for something to give your guests, here are a few suggestions.
Gifts You Can Give at Weddings
Almonds, chocolates or candies are popular choices, but the favors don’t always have to be edible. Some gifts can be practical, like magnets or can / bottle openers. The gifts can also be coordinated with the wedding theme.
For example you can give seashells for beach weddings. Christmas decors may also be given away as presents. If you want to give classic presents, sweet almonds and bite sized chocolates are the best options. Scented soaps and candles are classy presents.
Other Types of Wedding Favors
For something contemporary, try giving shot glasses with colored chocolates inside. Silver or gold picture frames of the couple are also popular. Whatever the gift may be, it is customary to have the wedding date or the couple’s initials included in the gift or the box containing the present.
Considerations
While these presents vary, they are almost always palm sized or small enough to fit the pockets. Large presents can be difficult to carry especially if the guests far away.
For the couple, small gifts also offer an advantage; they are easier to arrange at the wedding. Even if the gift is small, your guests will definitely appreciate it.
Warnings
If giving away edible wedding favors, make sure the ingredients are listed. This will prevent anyone allergic to any of the contents from ingesting it. If you know several of the guests have food allergies, avoid giving away edible gifts.
Historical Background
Records show that as far back as the 16th century, wealthy French and Italian couples would give presents to their guests. The gift boxes often were made of crystal, precious stones and porcelain. They were originally known as the bonbonniere which would become the precursor to the modern wedding gifts.
The presents given consisted of 5 candies or almonds. The five treats symbolized longevity, fertility, happiness, wealth and health. As the years went by, the practice reached other countries. The gifts also evolved with time. Today the gifts are reflective of the wedding theme or the couple’s personalities.
Whatever type of wedding favors you give, just remember what it is for. It is a gift that will give the guests something to remember the occasion by. A well chosen present will be something the guests will always cherish.
